Livestock Guard Dogs: Rocky & Rambo
Our Livestock Guard Dogs (LGDs) are Great Pyrenees purchased from Stewart Yoder just outside of Hillsville, VA on Feb 1, 2007. We got them at 11 weeks of age and they already weigh in at about 25 lbs. We considered several names for The Boys, but because of the serious nature of their mission we decided to go with the tough and virile approach: Rocky & Rambo.  We've had them separated but accessible to our new herd of 11 goats for about a week. Since they came from a working goat farm, however, they've assimilated nicely and now run free with the goats, who either assume they are other goats or just ignore them running in their midst.

As young as they are, the boys are very alert to approaches by other animals or strangers and will start barking and growling to warn off intruders. This is typical guard dog behavior and is really cute coming from a 30 lbs puppy. It will be a lot more serious when they reach their adult size of about 160 lbs. The most important thing is that they are learning their roles and get along well with their goats.

March 8, 2007 -- A good visit to the vet today. The boys gained about 15 lbs each during the last month!
Look closely at the first pic (guard_dog.jpg). That's Rambo alert & and in front of the flock. Way in the background is a lone goat in a separate pasture -- and there's Rocky laying nearby. These guys are the best!
